From the Office
Just a bit of administrative business this month. Since 1998
we've been sending out our newsletter as plain text via email. In
the 90s, it was the best (actually, the only) way to do it.
However, now, in the 'teens, it's not so great. Many times it gets
classed as spam and it also lacks timeliness upon occasion (since we
don't want to fill your in-box with message after message, we only send
mass emails out once per month).
A few months ago we started our blog at
http://borderlands-books.blogspot.com/ and it's been quite a
success. In many ways it's much better than our email newsletter
-- we can post anytime we like, it's easy to include pictures and assume
that people will be able to see them, it lets us track what people are
reading and what they're interested in and so on. Plus, people can
sign up to get our posts sent right to their email if they'd like so,
if people want, they can still have our news arriving via email. But,
since the email is coming from the great and powerful Google, rather
than the little and sort-of-insignificant Borderlands, those updates
won't get trapped by spam filters.
At some point in the next year or two, we're going to stop sending out
our newsletter via email. The date isn't set yet and I'll make
sure that you've got plenty of warning before we stop. But, why
not go over to our blog and check it out? And, while you're there,
sign up to get our updates via email. The box to do so is right
up near the top, right corner of the page. You'll find that we
post stuff at the blog that doesn't get into the newsletter (including
some stuff by yours truly) and we also post news as it happens, rather
than rounding it all up at the end of the month.

Seanan McGuire, ASHES OF HONOR (DAW, Mass Market, $7.99) Saturday,
September 8th at 6:00 pm - A new October Daye novel is always reason for
a celebration, so Borderlands and Hugo Award- winner Seanan McGuire
invite you to come on down for more music, magic, silliness and raffle
prizes! An event with Seanan is always an Event, and this time
we're happy to welcome musicians Vixy &Tony and Jeff and Maya
Bohnhoff as well as the author (and songstress) herself. The
new novel, ASHES OF HONOR, is my favorite in the series so far.

Steven Erikson, FORGE OF DARKNESS (Tor, Hardcover, $27.99) Saturday,
September 22nd at 3:00 pm - We're delighted to welcome Steven Erikson to
Borderlands after a 3-year absence! We've been fans of Steve's
since the very beginning, so it's appropriate that we're hosting an
event for FORGE OF DARKNESS, the first in a new Malazan trilogy.
Bring your questions and your books to be signed and make sure you don't
miss it -- we hope it won't be another three years before Steve
returns, but you don't want to take the chance.
Cory Doctorow, PIRATE CINEMA (Tor, Hardcover, $19.99) Thursday, October
4th at 7:00 pm - We're tremendously excited to once again welcome former
local author Cory Doctorow! Cory's new novel is another LITTLE
BROTHER-style tale of teenage rebellion. From the book jacket:
"Trent McCauley is sixteen, brilliant, and obsessed with one thing:
making movies on his computer by reassembling footage from popular films
he downloads from the net. In the dystopian near-future Britain where
Trent is growing up, this is more illegal than ever; the punishment for
being caught three times is that your entire household’s access to the
internet is cut off for a year, with no appeal. Trent's too clever for
that too happen. Except it does, and it nearly destroys his family.
Shamed and shattered, Trent runs away to London, where he slowly he
learns the ways of staying alive on the streets. This brings him in
touch with a demimonde of artists and activists who are trying to fight a
new bill that will criminalize even more harmless internet creativity,
making felons of millions of British citizens at a stroke. Things look
bad. Parliament is in power of a few wealthy media conglomerates. But
the powers-that-be haven’t entirely reckoned with the power of a
gripping movie to change people’s minds . . . ." Now that Cory's moved
to the UK, we hardly ever see him, so don't miss this chance!
