News
* Artist and customer Stan Heller, creator of awesome 3-D art, made
an entire 24-page-long three dimensional comic book in 24 hours for 24
Hour Comic Book Day, and it features two Borderlands Cafe
employees! Click here to see your baristas as you've never seen
them before. (Work-safe, but may cause slight dizziness): <http://webtales.us/>.
* There's a new member of the Borderlands family: Frost, a four-month
old Sphynx kitten, has joined us! She's Ash's niece, and
thoroughly adorable. Come say hi to her! And, because
nothing succeeds like excess, one of the Cafe employees has adopted
Frost's sister, Blip, and sometimes brings her to the bookstore for
play-dates. So there's the possibility of running into three
hairless cats in the store if you time it correctly. Yes, we are
a little concerned about destroying the universe with a Cuteness
Singularity. For those of you who are long-distance, we've posted
some pictures of Frost on Flickr: <http://www.flickr.com/photos/12605353@N08/>.
* Speaking of Sphynx, we know of one who needs a home. She's a
show-quality female named Mia, just under one year old. She's
friendly but not terribly socialized, i.e. she'll do great with a
family but shouldn't be a bookstore cat. The adoption fee is
$1000. Please email Jude at jude@borderlands-books.com if you're
interested and we can put you in touch with her current owners.
* We're up to about 1400 followers on Twitter! Follow us at
either borderlands_sf for timely store news and event updates, or
borderlands_new for new arrivals.

Upcoming Event Details
F.
Paul Wilson, FATAL ERROR, (Tor, Hardcover, $25.99) and Dan Wells, MR.
MONSTER, (Tor, Hardcover, $21.99 and Trade Paperback, $9.99) Saturday,
October 16th at 1:00 pm - We are thrilled to welcome F. Paul
Wilson back to Borderlands for the penultimate Repairman Jack novel,
FATAL ERROR. I love this write-up from Tor about the series: "For
the uninitiated, Repairman Jack doesn't fix appliances, though that is
what some who respond to his website hope for. Jack (who uses a variety
of last names) fixes the wrongs of society. And his methods rarely fall
within the bounds of the law. They may include larceny, murder,
extortion, blackmail and other nefarious tricks. But his results are
always better than the law could have meted out. Nor is the
Repairman entirely altruistic. He tries to be in it only for the money,
but, against his better judgment, he just can't seem to help becoming
involved with his clients. In most of Jack's cases, a lot of people end
up dead, and in interesting ways. Poetic justice is his
specialty." Mr. Wilson is one of our favorite auhors, and we hope
you'll take this chance to meet him. Also joining F. Paul Wilson
will be Dan Wells, author of I AM NOT A SERIAL KILLER, and now, MR.
MONSTER. Wells' novels concern teenaged John Wayne Cleaver, who
is doing his very best not to become one of the serial killers he's
obsessed with . . . . Mr. Wells was kind enough to stop by the
store when his first novel came out and he's a fascinating and
articulate fellow who knows _way_ to much about serial killers.
Alan read both of the novels and though they were really very
good. We're all looking forward to the interesting conversation
that's liable to happen between Paul and Dan.
Cherie Priest, DREADNOUGHT, (Tor, Trade Paperback, $14.99) Saturday, October 16th at 4:00 pm -
From Tor: "Nurse Mercy Lynch is elbows deep in bloody laundry at a war
hospital in Richmond, Virginia, when Clara Barton comes bearing bad
news: Mercy's husband has died in a POW camp. On top of that, a
telegram from the west coast declares that her estranged father is
gravely injured, and he wishes to see her. Mercy sets out toward the
Mississippi River. Once there, she'll catch a train over the Rockies
and --if the telegram can be believed -- be greeted in Washington
Territory by the sheriff, who will take her to see her father in
Seattle. Reaching the Mississippi is a harrowing adventure by
dirigible and rail through war-torn border states. When Mercy finally
arrives in St. Louis, the only Tacoma-bound train is pulled by a
terrifying Union-operated steam engine called the Dreadnought.
Reluctantly, Mercy buys a ticket and climbs aboard. What ought to
be a quiet trip turns deadly when the train is beset by bushwhackers,
then vigorously attacked by a band of Rebel soldiers. The train is
moving away from battle lines into the vast, unincorporated west, so
Mercy can't imagine why they're so interested. Perhaps the mysterious
cargo secreted in the second and last train cars has something to do
with it? Mercy is just a frustrated nurse who wants to see her
father before he dies. But she'll have to survive both Union intrigue
and Confederate opposition if she wants to make it off the Dreadnought
alive." DREADNOUGHT takes place in the same alternate world as
last year's thrilling BONESHAKER, and we are so glad to have this
opportunity to host Cherie and ask questions about the Clockwork
Century.
SF in SF presents authors Karen
Joy Fowler and Claude Lalumiere at the Variety Preview Room, 582 Market
Street, Saturday, October 16th at 7:00 pm - We are very excited
to help SF in SF welcome these authors! Each author will read a
selection from their work, followed by Q&A from the audience
moderated by author Terry Bisson. Authors will schmooze &
sign books after in the lounge. Books available for sale courtesy of
Borderlands Books. Seating is limited, so first come, first
seated. Bar proceeds benefit Variety Childrens Charity - learn
more at <http://www.varietync.org/>.
We REALLY encourage you to take BART into the City, or use MUNI to get
here - parking can be problematic in San Francisco, to say the
least. The venue is less than one block away from the Montgomery
St. station. Trust us - you don't want to be looking for parking
and be late for the event! Phone (night of event)

Ken Scholes, ANTIPHON (Tor, Hardcover, $25.99) Sunday, October 17th at 1:00 pm -
ANTIPHON is the third volume in the projected five-book "Psalms of
Isaak" series. From the publisher, Tor Books: "Nothing is
as it seems to be. The ancient past is not dead. The hand of the
Wizard Kings still reaches out to challenge the Androfrancine Order, to
control the magick and technology that they sought to understand and
claim for their own. Nebios, the boy who watched the destruction
of the city of Windwir, now runs the vast deserts of the world, far
from his beloved Marsh Queen. He is being hunted by strange women
warriors, while his dreams are invaded by warnings from his dead
father. Jin Li Tam, queen of the Ninefold Forest, guards her son
as best she can against both murderous threats, and the usurper queen
and her evangelists. They bring a message: Jakob is the child of
promise of their Gospel, and the Crimson Empress is on her way. And in
hidden places, the remnants of the Androfrancine order formulate their
response to the song pouring out of a silver crescent that was found in
the wastes." We are very glad to have the intelligent &
personable Ken Scholes back at Borderlands so you can meet him, too!
David Weber, OUT OF THE DARK (Tor, Hardcover, $25.99) Sunday, October 17th at 3:00 pm - We're
happy to host David Weber, author of the New York Times Bestselling
Honor Harrington books, as he presents his new standalone novel OUT OF
THE DARK. In this new book, aliens have arrived and the majority
of Earth's cities lie in ruins. Master Sargeant Stephen
Buchevsky, who thought he was coming home from his latest tour in
Afghanistan, instead finds himself roaming the back country of the
Balkans and organizing scattered survivors. The aliens have
underestimated humanity's tenacity, but no amount of heroism can hold
off overwheleming force forever. Then the survivors find the most
unlikely ally imaginable. Join us to meet David Weber and check
out this radical departure from his last few novels!
Professor Laurence A. Rickels, I
THINK I AM: PHILIP K. DICK (University of Minnesota Press, Trade
Paperback, $25.00) Saturday. October 23rd at 3:00 pm - Professor
Rickels has written a book which "explores the science fiction author's
meditations on psychic reality and psychosis, Christian mysticism,
Eastern religion, and modern spiritualism. Laurence A. Rickels
corrects the lack of scholarly interest in the legendary Californian
author and, ultimately, makes a compelling case for the philosophical
and psychoanalytic significance of Philip K. Dick's popular and
influential science fiction." Don't miss this chance to meet Mr.
Rickels and hear his insights on the (in)famous Philip K. Dick!
Shaenon Garrity and Jeffrey C.
Wells, SKIN HORSE VOL. 2 (Couscous Collective, Trade Paperback, $13.99)
Saturday, October 23rd at 5:00 pm - We are so pleased to welcome
Shaenon Garrity (of "Narbonic" fame!) and co-creator Jeffrey C. Wells
as they show off the second (bound) volume of the webcomic "Skin
Horse". Skin Horse is the code name of the secret government
agency that rescues and resettles non-humans created by mad scientists
-- think of them as the Black Ops Social Services. The webcomic
follows their (mis)adventures. Bring your questions for Shaenon
and Jeffrey and learn about what it's like to create a hugely popular
webcomic!
SF in SF presents a free
Halloween movie ("The Changeling") with a very special reading
beforehand! Author guests will be Ray Garton, Rain Graves, John Shirley
and Chelsea Quinn Yarbro. At the the Variety Preview Room, 582
Market Street, Saturday, October 23rd at 7:00 pm
Richard Kadrey, KILL THE DEAD (Eos, Hardcover, $22.99) Sunday, October 24th at 3:00 pm -
All hail the return of local favorite Richard Kadrey and his incredibly
entertaining anti-hero Sandman Slim! If you somehow created the
lopsided & unholy lovechild of Warren Ellis, Neil Gaiman, Jim
Thompson, Hunter S. Thompson and Kim Harrison, you'd have Sandman Slim.
From Harper: "James Stark, a.k.a. Sandman Slim, crawled out of Hell,
took bloody revenge for his girlfriend's murder, and saved the world
along the way. After that, what do you do for an encore? You take a
lousy job tracking down monsters for money. It's a depressing gig, but
it pays for your beer and cigarettes. But in L.A., things can always
get worse. Like when Lucifer comes to town to supervise his movie
biography and drafts Stark as his bodyguard. Sandman Slim has to swim
with the human and inhuman sharks of L.A.'s underground power elite.
That's before the murders start. And before he runs into the Czech porn
star who isn't quite what she seems. Even before all those murdered
people start coming back from the dead and join a zombie army that will
change our world and Stark's forever. Death bites. Life is worse.
All things considered, Hell's not looking so bad."
Richard Thieme, MIND GAMES (Duncan Long Publications, Trade Paperback, $20.00) Saturday. October 30th at 3:00 pm -
From the book cover: "MIND GAMES, a collection of nineteen stories of
brave new worlds and alternate realities. Clint Brooks, former
Senior Advisor for Homeland Security and Assistant Deputy Director,
NSA, says: 'Richard Thieme takes us to the edge of cliffs we know are
there but rarely visit. He wonderfully weaves life, mystery, and
passion through digital and natural worlds with creativity and
imagination. Delightful and deeply thought provoking reading.'
Stories of computer hackers, deception and intelligence, puzzling
anomalies, spirituality and mysteries of consciousness, the paranormal,
UFOs, alien life forms - in short, everyday life in the 21st century.
Play these MIND GAMES and see why the most common response to Richard
Thieme's writing and speaking is: 'You made me think.'"
S.G. Browne, Launch Party for FATED (New American Library, Trade Paperback, $15.00) Saturday. November 6th at 5:00 pm -
Local author S.G. Browne knocked our socks off with his debut novel, a
bittersweet & funny zombie love story with some pretty serious
undertones called BREATHERS. Now he's back with a brand-new (and
unrelated) novel about a fate worse than. . . Fate. From the book
description: "Over the past few thousand years, Fabio has come to hate
his job. As Fate, he's in charge of assigning the fortunes and
misfortunes that befall most of the human race-the 83% who keep
screwing things up. Frustrated with his endless parade of drug
addicts and career politicians, Fate has to watch Destiny guide her
people to Nobel Peace Prizes and Super Bowl MVPs. To make matters
worse, he has a five- hundred-year-old feud with Death, and his best
friends are Sloth and Gluttony. And worst of all? He's fallen in love
with a human. Getting involved with a human breaks Rule #1, and
about ten others, setting off some cosmic-sized repercussions that
could strip him of his immortality -- or lead to a fate worse than
death."
