Clarion
West Fundraiser Reading with Karen Joy Fowler, Pat Murphy, Tim Pratt,
Katherine Sparrow, and Rachel Swirsky, Saturday, July 10th at 3:00 pm -
Join us for an awesome fund-raising reading for Clarion West!
Clarion West is an intensive six-week workshop for writers preparing
for professional careers in science fiction and fantasy, held annually
in Seattle, Washington, USA. As Clarion West is a non-profit, it relies
on donations from members of the writing community -- the Clarion West
Write-a-thon is a pledge drive that runs in conjunction with Clarion
West. The Write-a-thon lets people create public writing goals for
themselves and helps to raise awareness of Clarion West in the
community. All of the people reading at Borderlands are either Clarion
West or Clarion alumni, or have been instructors in the past. If you
are interested in learning more about Clarion West, or are
participating in the Write-a-thon and want to meet others like yourself
in the Bay Area, this reading is the place to be!
Jennifer Brozek and Seanan
McGuire, IN A GILDED LIGHT (Dark Quest Books, Trade Paperback, $14.95),
Saturday, July 17th at 3:00 pm - Join us to meet author and
editor Jenn Brozek, and also local favorite Seanan McGuire, who wrote
the introduction to Brozek's collection of 105 vignettes! From
the author: "One of my favorite things about my In a Gilded Light
vignettes is the way I kill (curse, torture, etc) my friends in them. I
only murder (in text) those I love. With permission, of course. I hated
the thought of a perfect vignette about killing a friend making that
friend mad at me. Worse still, having someone think I was
serious. After a short while, some of my friends asked, "When do
I get killed? You can do what you want, just don't use spiders." Or,
more intriguing still, "When do I get to be the murderer? I don't want
to be killed but you can use me as the murderer." This opened up a
whole new set of inspiration. Each one of these vignettes
is a little piece of me. To paraphrase a movie quote, "I see story
ideas - all the time. They're everywhere. Just walking around like
normal ideas. They don't know they're stories." I wrote these vignettes
over a two-and-a-half year period with varying degrees of
inspiration. This compilation is perfect for people who have only
a little time to read at one time. It is ideal for commuting, as a
coffee table book or a book to leave in the bathroom. Each vignette
takes minutes to read while giving the reader a story to think about
for the rest of the day. Dig in and sample my imagination. These
are the things I think about every day. This vignette collection is a
little part of me and I really enjoyed writing them. I hope you enjoy
reading them."
SF in SF presents Brian and Wendy Froud at the Variety Preview Room (582 Market Street), Monday, July 19th at 7:00 pm -
(Thanks to Rina from SF in SF, from whom we stole this write-up!)
"Renowned faerie artists Brian and Wendy Froud are known to many for
their work on the Jim Henson films "The Dark Crystal" and
"Labyrinth". The Frouds are appearing at SF in SF to discuss
their beautiful new box set, THE HEART OF FAERIE ORACLE, published by
Abrams. THE HEART OF FAERIE ORACLE opens the door into the Enchanted
Realm as never before. It includes 68 oracle cards illustrated by Brian
Froud and an accompanying guidebook written by Wendy Froud. As
conceptual designer for "Dark Crystal," Brian Froud provided Henson
with hundreds of paintings, drawings and sculptures to define the
characters, and worked very closely with the construction of the
maquettes. Wendy Froud, a key member of the original conceptual
team, was in charge of creating the Gelflings and also operated the
radio-control mechanism that gave Jen his subtle facial
expressions. For Labyrinth, Brian produced the drawings that gave
inspiration to screenwriter, Terry Jones. Wendy Froud was also
part of the team that created Yoda for "The Empire Strikes Back," doing
a major part of the developing, sculpting and puppet building.
Brian Froud is also well known for his literary works with
collaborators the like of Alan Lee, Terry Jones, and Alexander Theroux,
resulting in the delightful books GOBLINS, MASTER SNICKUP'S CLOAK,
FAERIES, GOOD FAERIES/BAD FAERIES, LADY COTTINGTON'S PRESSED FAERIE
BOOK, WHERE HAVE ALL THE GIANTS GONE?, and many more. Together
with Wendy Froud and Terri Windling, he also gave us the delightful
series comprised of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S FAERY TALE, THE WINTER CHILD,
and FAERIES OF SPRING COTTAGE. PLEASE RSVP FOR THIS EVENT TO
RESERVE YOUR SEAT. All those who RSVP will be assured of a
seat. If you do not, then it's first come, first seated.
This event is free and open to the public; seating is limited.
Please send an email with names to reserve to:
sfinsfevents@gmail.com. Please RSVP for no more than two
people. Booksigning by the Frouds will take place in the lounge
after the program. Books (no DVDs) for sale courtesy of
Borderlands Books."
Carrie Vaughn, KITTY GOES TO WAR
(Tor, Mass Market, $7.99) and DISCORD'S APPLE (Tor, Hardcover, $23.99),
Saturday July 24th at 3:00 pm - Meet best-selling author Carrie
Vaughn (author of the hugely popular Kitty Norville series) as she
presents the newest Kitty book (KITTY GOES TO WAR), and also an
original novel, DISCORD'S APPLE, that's just received a starred review
from Publishers Weekly! :"Taking a break from the Kitty Norville urban
fantasy series, Vaughn melds a near-future world torn by war with the
legend of the fall of Troy in this brilliantly structured, beautifully
written stand-alone. Evie Walker is a comic book writer who leaves
behind a strife-filled Los Angeles to care for her dying father in the
smalltown of Hopes Fort, Colo. Evie soon inherits the responsibility of
guarding a magical storeroom and its contents as the country becomes
hyperdefensive about possible terrorist threats. Intermingled with
Evie's story is the tale of Sinon the Liar, who persuaded the Trojans
to bring Odysseus's horse inside their walls and wound up cursed with
immortality. Vaughn brings together mythology, fairy tales, and very
human lives, immersing readers in the stories these complex characters
tell themselves to make sense of their war-torn worlds."
Borderlands event policy - all events are free of charge. You are
